Google Assistant to be removed from Android phones, tablets and Wear OS devices starting Sept. 4

Google is preparing to retire Google Assistant from a wide range of Android devices as the company continues shifting users toward its Gemini artificial intelligence assistant.

Beginning Sept. 4, Google Assistant will start disappearing from Android phones and tablets, Wear OS smartwatches and other compatible devices. Google said the transition could take several weeks to reach all affected users, after which Assistant will no longer function on those devices.

The change will apply to Android phones capable of running Gemini and located in regions where the newer AI assistant is available. Compatible accessories, including some headphones paired with affected devices, will also transition to Gemini.

Google TV, Google Home and smart displays are not affected by the change at this time. The company has also said a legacy version of Google Assistant will remain available on phones running Android 9 or earlier with less than 2GB of RAM for basic functions.

Google Assistant will continue to operate in vehicles equipped with Google built-in, although it will no longer be available in vehicles using Android Auto projected from a user's smartphone.

Users who want to make the switch to Gemini can install the Gemini app on compatible Android devices. The transition represents another major step in Google's effort to replace its longtime digital assistant with its newer generative AI platform.
