Music executive Dapper Damm has denied claims that he sold the catalogues of artists signed to his label, insisting that no artist’s catalogue has been sold to a distributor, third party or anyone else.
In a new statement addressing the allegations surrounding his label, Dapper also clarified how the revenue figures being circulated online should be understood.
He explained that catalogue revenue figures quoted online are gross figures and do not represent the amount ultimately payable to an artist. According to him, streaming platforms and distributors take their respective shares before other costs advanced by the label are recouped.
Dapper claimed that the label’s investments in the artists exceeded the earnings generated, leaving some balances unrecouped.
He also addressed concerns surrounding masters and ownership, saying that when a label finances the production, promotion and release of a record, ownership of the master recording typically follows the financial investment and risk taken by the label.
According to him, these terms were contained in the artists’ agreements, explained before signing and negotiated by both parties.
Dapper further urged those involved in the dispute to rely on contracts, accounting records and audits rather than social media posts.
“Social media is not a court of law,” he said, arguing that viral posts and repeated allegations do not by themselves establish wrongdoing.
He then directly addressed one of the claims that has continued to circulate, stating: “I have not sold anyone’s catalogue. Not to a distributor, not to a third party, not to anyone.”
