LSWMO TO HOLD TWO-DAY TECHNICAL WORKSHOP ON SEWAGE TREATMENT OPERATIONS
The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) is set to host a two-day Technical Workshop on Sewage Treatment Operations for sewage treatment plant operators in Lagos State.
This workshop is designed to strengthen the professional capacity in the sewage management sector and to address the day-to-day operational challenges and improve the effective management of sewage treatment plants across Lagos.
The training workshop, themed “Effective Operation of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs),” is being organised in partnership with the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE) and will be held from Wednesday, 2nd September to Thursday, 3rd September, 2026.
Speaking on the upcoming maiden edition of the programme, the General Manager, LSWMO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi described the training as part of the government’s strategic efforts to promote safe, efficient and environmentally compliant wastewater management across Lagos State, particularly in residential and commercial facilities where effective operation of sewage treatment plants is critical to preventing environmental pollution and protecting public health.
He stated that the programme reflects the agency's commitment to ensuring that wastewater infrastructure delivers the environmental outcomes for which it was established.
Affirming that effective wastewater management requires more than just infrastructure and regulation, Engr. Afolabi stressed that the competence of the professionals operating treatment facilities is central to translating infrastructure and regulatory standards into safe, efficient and sustainable outcomes.
“The workshop will provide participants with practical knowledge in STP operations and maintenance, wastewater treatment processes, laboratory analysis and determination of effluent parameters, wastewater microbiology and plant optimisation. It will also promote approaches that support energy efficiency, safe sanitation, wastewater reuse and recycling, and the principles of a circular economy”, he revealed.
It will also provide a platform for practitioners to share field experiences, examine common operational challenges and explore practical solutions for more efficient and sustainable wastewater management in Lagos.
“Our commitment to building a technically competent, compliance-driven and sustainability-focused wastewater management system capable of supporting Lagos’ growing population and protecting its environmental resources remains unwavering”, he acknowledged.
He maintained that the initiative would contribute to the State’s broader environmental sustainability objectives by strengthening the link between regulation, professional competence and operational compliance.
The training is expected to bring together a diverse range of professionals and practitioners, including STP operators, maintenance officers, plant supervisors, engineers, environmental consultants, quality assurance officers, HSE professionals and facilities managers, creating a common platform for knowledge-sharing, experience exchange and practical solutions to the challenges of wastewater treatment and regulatory compliance.
