Miley Cyrus breaks silence on Dolly Parton’s d!ath, “I have an angel by my side”
Miley Cyrus says the l0ss of her godmother Dolly Parton is “beyond what feels right to share” after the country music icon d!ed at 80.
Cyrus paid tribute to Parton on Instagram Wednesday, Aug. 26, describing their relationship as deeply personal and saying some of their most important moments together will remain private.
“Our most sacred moments were private and they’ll stay there behind the stage, beneath the glamour & between our hearts,” Cyrus wrote.
The singer said one of her last conversations with Parton was about “music and metamorphosis,” adding that she knows what her godmother would have wanted her to do after her passing.
“What I KNOW is Dolly would want me to feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong,” Cyrus wrote. “I have an angel by my side. I always have.”
Cyrus added that she “will always love her and want to make her proud,” while acknowledging the impact Parton’s passing will have on her family, friends and fans.
“My heart breaks for the world, her family and friends who will miss her deeply. We’re in this loss together and we will see her in all of the most beautiful things,” she wrote.
Alongside the tribute, Cyrus shared a black-and-white photo of Parton.
Parton had been part of Cyrus’ life from before she was born. The country star became her godmother after developing a close friendship with Cyrus’ father, Billy Ray Cyrus, who she met while they were touring together in the 1990s.
Billy Ray and his then-wife Tish asked Parton to become Miley’s godmother after she was born in 1992.
“He said… ‘We’re having a girl, and you’ve got to be her godmother!’ And I said, ‘Well, I’d be honored,’” Parton previously recalled. “So actually, Miley and I took over from there. We’ve just stayed very, very close through the years… I love Miley. She’s my little sweetheart.”
That relationship also became part of Cyrus’ career. Parton appeared as her fairy godmother on Hannah Montana, featuring in three episodes between 2006 and 2010.
The two later worked together on music, including a new version of Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” for Parton’s 2023 album Rockstar.
