 Morgan Freeman praises Taylor Sheridan for having 'courage' to write about 'what people are actually going through'

Morgan Freeman, who stars as Secretary of State Edwin Mullins in Paramount+’s Lioness, recently commended creator Taylor Sheridan’s writing for its focus on human emotions and experiences. 

In an interview with The New York Times, the 89‑year‑old actor explained that Sheridan’s storytelling often highlights the personal struggles and decisions people face, citing Zoe Saldaña’s character Joe as an example of someone balancing life‑or‑death missions with family responsibilities.

 Freeman said it takes courage to write about such themes, and Sheridan demonstrates that courage consistently.

Freeman, who joined the series in its first season in 2023, emphasized that Lioness is not intended to mirror current geopolitical events. Instead, season three follows Saldaña’s character as she confronts hidden enemies while grappling with how the conflict affects every aspect of her life. 

Freeman noted that while audiences may interpret the story through their own perspectives, the show itself is designed to explore universal human dilemmas rather than contemporary politics.

Other cast members have echoed Freeman’s admiration for Sheridan’s writing. At the July premiere in New York City, Zoe Saldaña praised Sheridan’s ability to craft complex characters that transcend gender and race, allowing actors to fully embody their roles. 

She explained that characters like Joe or Kaitlyn could have been written as either men or women, but Sheridan’s approach focuses on the depth of the individual rather than stereotypes. 

Saldaña expressed respect for Sheridan’s skill in writing women authentically, crediting him with creating opportunities for actors to rise to challenging, nuanced roles.
