 EFCC Arraigns One for  N700m Fraud in Lagos  The Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Friday, September 4, 2026, arraigned Osaretin Osagiede before Justice Olukayode Ogunjobi of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja,  over an alleged N700 million fraud. Osagiede is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on unauthorised access to computer material and receiving stolen property to the tune of N700 million.  Count one reads: “That you Osaretin Osagiede and Zacharia Lorshe (at large), between March, 2025 and January 2026, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, intentionally caused the Ravenpay user accounts' two-factor authentication (2FA) method to be bypassed, with the intent to secure unauthorised access to the bank's data and committed an offence contrary to Section 387 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.  MTV VMAs Discontinues 'Best Afrobeats' Category Following Fan Backlash


The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) have officially retired the "Best Afrobeats" category ahead of the upcoming 2026 awards ceremony. The decision, revealed alongside the announcement of the 2026 nominees, comes after consecutive years of debate and public outcry surrounding the category's boundaries and representation.


A Short-Lived but Controversial History


The "Best Afrobeats" category was first introduced in 2023 to honor the skyrocketing global influence of African music. The inaugural award went to Nigerian superstar Rema and Selena Gomez for their record-breaking hit "Calm Down." However, the subsequent years sparked intense debate within the music community.


South African star Tyla claimed back-to-back victories in 2024 and 2025 with her hit singles "Water" and "Push 2 Start," respectively. These consecutive wins drew criticism from music purists and fans, particularly in Nigeria. Critics argued that awarding the prize to Tyla whose signature sound is deeply rooted in Amapiano and Pop fusion rather than Afrobeats constituted a misrepresentation of African music genres.


While MTV organizers have not released an official statement explaining the deletion of the category, industry analysts widely believe the cancellation is a direct response to these ongoing debates.


African Artists Secure Nominations in Mainstream Categories


Despite the elimination of the dedicated Afrobeats category, prominent African artists continue to make their mark on the international stage. Prominent Nigerian musicians Burna Boy and Tems both secured notable nominations for the 2026 awards:


• Tems: Earned a nomination in the Best R&B category for "Raindance," her collaboration with British artist Dave.

• Burna Boy: Secured two nominations Best Collaboration and Best Latin for his appearance on Shakira's World Cup anthem, "Dai Dai."

On the other hand, Tyla did not make the nominee list this year. Her viral hit "Chanel" was highly anticipated to contend for, and potentially win, the now-canceled Afrobeats category.


Event Details


The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will take place on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The prestigious ceremony is set to be broadcast live from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
