Friends of Nolan Wells Detail Last Moments With Him Before He Was Found Unresponsive on Mississippi Island
Friends who were with Nolan Wells at a July 4 gathering on Horn Island have shared more details about the final time they say they saw the 18-year-old, including why they say he decided to remain on the island after they left.
Wells, a Black student-athlete, was found on the Mississippi island on July 6, two days after the party. Authorities initially said there were no apparent signs of foul play and considered drowning as a possible explanation because the area is known for rip currents.
More than a month later, the circumstances surrounding Wells’ d3@th remain unresolved.
The state autopsy results have not been released, while an independent autopsy commissioned by his family was unable to determine a cause of d3@th or rule out foul play because of limitations involving his remains. It did not, however, identify any severe injuries.
In a new interview with conservative commentator Brandon Tatum, Wells’ friends Jax Pitalo, Morgan Seymour and Warren Hudson described what they say happened on July 4.
“Nolan was like a brother to us,” Pitalo said on The Officer Tatum Show.
According to the friends, Wells met a young woman at the gathering and decided to remain on Horn Island rather than leave with them.
The friends said their boat had begun taking on water, prompting them to leave the island. They said Wells agreed to stay behind and planned to get a ride later on another boat.
They also said Wells did not have his phone with him when they left because he had placed it on their boat to keep it from getting wet.
That decision has become one of the details questioned by Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, who have described his decision to remain behind without his phone as unusual and out of character.
Wells’ family has continued to question the circumstances surrounding his d3@th and is pursuing an independent investigation alongside the official inquiry. They have also reportedly threatened legal action involving some people who attended the party as they seek more information about what happened.
The lack of a confirmed cause of d3@th has also fueled speculation online. Both Wells’ family and friends have said they have faced harassment and d3@th threats amid the conspiracy theories surrounding the case.
At Wells’ funeral on July 20, his mother addressed her son directly.
“Nolan, we love you. We’ll continue to fight for you,” she said, adding that his absence had left “an emptiness that can never truly be filled.”
The friends’ latest account provides their explanation of why Wells remained on Horn Island, but questions about his final hours remain unanswered pending the release of the state autopsy findings and the ongoing investigations.
