Pardoned opposition leader calls for reconciliation with Chad's president

Chad's main opposition leader Succes Masra has called for reconciliation with President Mahamat Idriss Deby, shortly after being freed from prison under a presidential pardon.

"We need forgiveness, unity and peace. Gathered here today, we reaffirm to the entire nation our determination to build a reconciled Chad," Masra told hundreds of supporters at his party headquarters in the capital N'Djamena, AFP reported.

The former prime minister and leader of the opposition Transformers party was released late on Friday after spending more than a year in prison.

Masra had been serving a 20-year prison sentence for incitement to hatred and complicity in murder.

'We must work together'

"My conviction is that we must work together. We are ready to start tomorrow morning," Masra said.

"They know that outside the government, we are the main political force. Nothing can be built in the future without us."

A presidential decree published on Friday granted pardons to Masra and eight other jailed opposition figures.
