 Atiku pledges scholarship to viral Niger teen miner Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Sunday said his “heart breaks” each time he watches a viral video of a teenage artisanal miner, Yusuf Aliyu, speaking at a mining site in Niger State after the deaths of 37 miners in the state. Atiku, in a statement posted on his X handle, said he was prepared to support the boy’s education, describing him as a child whose intelligence and confidence should be nurtured in a classroom rather than by working at a mining site. “I have watched Yusuf Aliyu’s video repeatedly, and each time, my heart breaks. A child with such intelligence, clarity and confidence should be in a classroom building his future—not struggling for survival in a community surrounded by gold but buried in poverty. “I cannot look at him and see an ‘illegal miner.’ I see a Nigerian child failed by the country that should have protected him. I see brilliance trapped by poverty and enormous promise abandoned by leadership,” ...

 Physical Planning Ministry Commences 775 Economic Trees, Flower Planting Programme In Awka

Anambra State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has commenced a large scale programme by planting no fewer than 400 combination of economic trees and flowers in open spaces across Awka capital city.


The economic trees which include Oil palm, Orange, Mango, Coconut, Soursop, Royal Palm and Murraya flower varieties are being planted at government designated open spaces.


Areas covered include parts of New Government House(Light House), Emeka Anyaoku Blouvard, Alex Ekwueme Square, Ikenga Shopping Mall, Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Aroma, Kwata and Amawbia Flyovers as well as the Ministry's premises.


Speaking with newsmen during the programme, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Bar Chijioke Ojukwu, said the programme is designed to enhance environmental beauty, erosion control and food security.


According to the Head of Department, Landscape Department in the Ministry, Mrs Chidozie Onyeka, the on-going programme is expected to cover other strategic locations including the Solution Fun City.


Onyeka, who is the supervising team leader, clarified that 400 combination of economic trees and flowers had been planted so far, while 775 was the target.
