Prosecution rests in trial of Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three children
Prosecutors have concluded their case in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother who has acknowledged killing her three young children but argues that severe mental illness left her unable to understand or control her actions.
The prosecution rested Monday after three weeks of testimony, allowing Clancy’s defense team to begin presenting its case.
Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, is accused of intentionally killing her children on Jan. 24, 2023. Prosecutors contend she deliberately sent her husband, Patrick Clancy, out of the house to pick up food and visit a pharmacy before strangling the children and attempting to take her own life.
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington does not contest that Clancy killed the children. Instead, he argues she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a serious mental illness that can develop after childbirth. He has also argued that Clancy had bipolar disorder and that antidepressants prescribed after the birth of her third child contributed to the deterioration of her mental health.
Testimony has shown that Clancy sought professional help for significant mental health struggles, including voluntarily admitting herself to a psychiatric hospital. However, witnesses also testified that she did not always take medications prescribed for insomnia, anxiety, and depression and had expressed concerns about becoming dependent on some of the drugs.
During cross-examination, the defense questioned whether Clancy had been overmedicated and highlighted what it characterized as gaps in her treatment. Doctors involved in her care did not always communicate with each other, some appointments were conducted remotely, and medical records were not consistently shared, the defense argued.
The defense also pointed out that Clancy was discharged from one treatment facility after only one day and was denied a higher level of care at another facility because she could not demonstrate that she had a specific suicide plan.
Prosecutors, meanwhile, challenged the severity of Clancy’s suicide attempt and presented text messages and photographs showing her engaging in ordinary activities on the day her children were killed. She took the children to a medical appointment and played with them in the snow before the killings.
Doctors who treated Clancy also testified that they had not observed signs of mania or psychosis, although she repeatedly discussed suicidal thoughts.
Clancy has not testified and is not required to take the stand. Jurors have nevertheless seen her become emotional throughout the proceedings, including during testimony and when prosecutors presented autopsy photographs of her children.
Patrick Clancy previously gave emotional testimony about returning home and discovering that his children had been killed. Prosecutors played the 911 call he made after finding his wife outside in the backyard.
He also testified that Lindsay called him about a week after the killings. According to Patrick, she did not discuss the children but instead described what she believed she had experienced, including hearing a man's voice telling her that she needed to act immediately or she would lose her opportunity.
