Zambian Opposition Leader Brian Mundubile Surrenders to Police After Election Defeat

Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile has been handed over to police after going into hiding following his disputed election loss, state broadcaster ZNBC reports.

Mundubile lost the August 13 vote to President Hakainde Hichilema, who secured 60% to Mundubile’s 38%.

His party said Mundubile had been staying in a secure location under international protection in Lusaka after threats were made against him.

Police are now questioning Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, over alleged activities that could threaten national security — claims the opposition denies.

The opposition was unable to challenge the result after courts were sealed on the final day for filing petitions.

President Hichilema is due to be sworn in on September 1.
