87-year-old man charged with attacking Adamawa judge

An 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba, has been charged in Adamawa State after allegedly attacking a judge with a cutlass and causing severe injury to his hand.

Garba, a resident of Korawa village in Fufore Local Government Area, reportedly became enraged and attacked Dauda Hamman, the presiding judge of the Mayo-Inne Area Court.

DAILY POST reported on Tuesday that the incident occurred on Monday, August 31, while Hamman was hearing a case involving Garba and another man identified as Ismail Yusuf.

According to the Adamawa State Police Command, which is prosecuting the matter, Garba attacked the judge with a cutlass, leaving him with grievous injuries.

Police officers immediately arrested the suspect following the incident. On September 4, 2026, the case was transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters in Fufore to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yola for further investigation and prosecution.

In a statement released on Tuesday morning, the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said Garba was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola on Monday, September 7, 2026, following the completion of the investigation.

Nguroje said the defendant faces one count of causing grievous hurt, an offence contrary to Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.

When the charge was read and explained to Garba, he pleaded guilty and blamed the devil for his actions, according to the police spokesperson.

The court subsequently ordered that he be remanded at the Yola Correctional Facility pending further hearing.

Nguroje added that ASP Zakka Musa is prosecuting Garba on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan.
