After Two Years In Nigeria, Ex-Sierra Leone President Koroma Finally Returns Home As Treason Case Is Dropped

Former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma has departed Nigeria and returned to Sierra Leone after spending more than two years in the country amid a high-profile treason case.

Koroma left Sierra Leone for Nigeria in January 2024 after being granted permission to travel for medical treatment while facing charges connected to an alleged coup attempt.

The treason case was subsequently dropped by Sierra Leonean authorities, clearing the way for the former president to return home.

His departure brings a major chapter to a political saga that began with the alleged November 2023 coup attempt in Sierra Leone, which led to the arrest and prosecution of several people.

Koroma has denied any involvement in the alleged plot.

The former president, who served as Sierra Leone’s leader from 2007 to 2018, remained in Nigeria throughout the legal proceedings.

His return is expected to attract significant attention in Sierra Leone as the country continues to deal with the political fallout from the alleged coup attempt.
