An alleged cyberattack targeting FBI personnel records may have exposed highly sensitive medical information belonging to thousands of special agents, including blood and urine test results.
Hackers reportedly provided journalists with samples of the allegedly stolen material, including medical examinations used to determine whether employees are fit for duty. The group behind the alleged breach, known as ShinyHunters, has not publicly released the full dataset.
The group has claimed to have obtained information connected to FBI employees, including a list of roughly 5,000 alleged FBI officials. The full scope and authenticity of the information remain under investigation.
The FBI has previously warned about ShinyHunters, describing it as a cybercriminal group involved in large-scale data breaches and extortion. The group has been associated with harassment tactics against victims and their families, including threatening messages, phone calls and, in some cases, swatting incidents.
The alleged FBI breach may not be motivated solely by financial gain. ShinyHunters has reportedly sought to challenge statements the FBI has made about the group.
The FBI said it is aware of claims that the FBIJobs.gov portal was compromised and that personally identifiable information belonging to FBI employees may have been affected. Investigators have not yet determined whether the alleged breach originated with the FBI or a third-party provider supporting the website.
The agency said it is investigating the incident and working with third-party providers to reduce potential risks.
FBIJobs.gov has served as the FBI’s primary online application portal for prospective agents and support personnel since 2017.
Investigators are continuing to assess the alleged breach and determine what information, if any, was actually compromised.
