An Arizona mother tried to use her flip-flop to defend her daughter when a coyote attacked her.
Proving, yet again, mom's instinctively use their shoes as weapons. However, the mom is now left with battle scars as a testament to the lengths she would go to protect her child.
Brittany Cardinal and her 4-year-old daughter were out taking advantage of the windy afternoon in Surprise, Arizona, on September 6th. It was a perfect day for her daughter to fly her kite, and the two had found an area with a lot of open space.
Unfortunately, they weren't alone in the area. A coyote was nearby watching... and waiting.
While the young girl was playing, Brittany's attention wandered away from her daughter for just a moment. She was snapped back by a sharp scream from her daughter.
When she turned to see what had happened, Brittany could not believe her eyes. A coyote had snuck up on the unsuspecting girl and was actively nipping at the terrified child.
Mama Bear was unleashed as Brittany closed the distance and scooped up her daughter. During the opening seconds of the ordeal, Brittany was yelling at the coyote in an attempt to scare it away.
She was stunned when the vocal assault had absolutely zero effect on the animal. This is when Brittany decided to utilize the fallback weapon of mother's everywhere.
She removed her flip-flop and began waving it at the coyote in an aggressive manner. Unfortunately, the technique was also her undoing. With only one flip-flop on Brittany, became unbalanced and fell to the ground.
In this very brief moment of vulnerability, the coyote lunged in and bit her on the face.
Fortunately, after being bitten, Brittany and her daughter were able to retreat and ultimately escape.
Both mother and daughter were injured in the ordeal and sought medical help.
Thanks to Brittany's aggressive defense, her young daughter only suffered a minor bite. Brittany suffered multiple lacerations and punctures.
She is undergoing a series of post rabies exposure vaccines and antibiotics. This is protocol when a human is attacked by an animal that could possibly be rabid and it is a grueling, albeit very necessary, treatment.
Officials with Arizona Game and Fish say there is no clear reason for the coyote's behavior that afternoon.
Following the attack, several coyotes in the area were removed and tested for rabies.
