Adam Levine said he liked Blake Shelton right from their first meeting, even before their on-air rivalry began. Speaking ahead of The Voice Season 30 premiere, Levine recalled meeting Shelton at an initial NBC meeting with a group of people.
He said afterward he thought, "That dude was awesome," and was surprised to learn that Shelton would be his co-star. The two went on to become original coaches when The Voice premiered in 2011, with their playful dynamic becoming a signature part of the show.
Over the years, both have continued to tease each other in interviews. During a 2025 appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Levine joked about sitting in Shelton's former seat, saying it felt worn-in and sunken.
Shelton has also found his own ways to poke fun, including once gifting Levine's wife Behati Prinsloo a pet pig that eventually grew to around 400 pounds.
Despite the long-running jokes, the two have continued to support each other beyond their time as coaches together. Levine performed with Maroon 5 during the Season 20 finale and later returned for Shelton's final episode as a coach, while Shelton performed during the Season 27 finale after Levine rejoined the panel.
Levine originally coached for 16 seasons before stepping away, while Shelton stayed through Season 23. Levine returned for Seasons 27 and 29 and is now back for Season 30 alongside Kelly Clarkson, Queen Latifah and Riley Green.
NBC recently marked 15 years of the show with an Instagram promo featuring Shelton reuniting with Levine and his wife Gwen Stefani.
