A Southern California man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of his wife nearly 20 years ago after her remains were discovered hidden beneath a home in Big Bear.
Jeff Anthony Maiorca, 53, was arrested Monday after authorities identified human remains found in a crawlspace beneath a residence as those of his former wife, Jill Maiorca.
Jill was reported missing from Big Bear Lake in 2007. Investigators now believe she was killed in November 2006, when she was 29 years old.
The case was reopened in October 2020 after deputies responded to a report of a suspicious discovery in the crawlspace beneath a home. They found unidentified human remains concealed under the residence.
An autopsy determined that the person had died as a result of homicide.
In 2023, additional DNA analysis identified the remains as Jill Maiorca. Cold case homicide investigators continued working to determine who was responsible for her death and eventually identified her former husband as a suspect.
Public records indicate Jeff Maiorca had filed for divorce from Jill in Los Angeles County in 2004.
Authorities arrested Maiorca Monday afternoon at the Big Bear Lake branch library. He is being held without bail at the High Desert Jail in Adelanto.
Court records show Maiorca appeared for an initial hearing Wednesday and was formally charged with murder and use of a deadly weapon. No attorney was listed for him in court records, and his next hearing is scheduled for Oct. 12.
Investigators say the case remains active and are asking anyone with information about Jill Maiorca’s disappearance or death to come forward.
