El-Rufai’s Ally, Bashir Sa’idu Dumps ADC, Cites Primary Election Controversy

A political ally of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, Muhammad Bashir Sa’idu, has resigned his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing alleged irregularities in the party’s primary elections.

Sa’idu, who described himself as Chairman of the Kaduna State Coalition Leadership, announced his resignation in a letter dated September 17 and addressed to the ADC Ward Chairman in Gyallesu Ward, Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

In the letter, Sa’idu said he had contributed to efforts aimed at stabilising the party in Kaduna State, including mobilising resources for the payment of two years’ rent amounting to N44 million and more than N22 million for membership registration.

He also referenced N50 million which, according to him, was paid by El-Rufai.

Sa’idu said the party had conducted inclusive congresses under his leadership but alleged that the process was undermined during the subsequent primary elections.

He accused unnamed party leaders and members of imposing candidates and disregarding internal democratic procedures.

“Candidates of the party were arrogantly anointed with total disregard to internal democracy,” Sa’idu alleged.

He further claimed that some individuals produced their own result sheets during the primaries to favour their preferred candidates, alleging that the national leadership and the primary election committee subsequently endorsed the process.

Sa’idu said the developments, alongside “many other glaring reasons,” informed his decision to leave the party.

He concluded by expressing hope that the ADC would perform well at the polls scheduled for January/February 2027.
