 Nigeria suspends state defence corps commander after deaths of miners in custody Nigeria has suspended the NSCDC commandant of Niger State "pending investigations" after 37 people suspected of being illegal miners died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, a federal paramilitary agency in Nigeria. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered the "immediate suspension" of Niger State's NSCDC commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, pending the outcome of a full investigation after 37 people suspected of being illegal miners died while in detention on Thursday morning. "It is an unfortunate incident; however, a full investigation will be conducted while the commandant under whose watch this happened remains suspended," the Interior Ministry said in a statement.  FRSC ANAMBRA RECOVERS SUSPECTED STOLEN TRICYCLE IN AWKA 


The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Anambra State Sector Command, has recovered a suspected stolen TVS King tricycle in Awka through its National Vehicle Identification Scheme. 


The recovery followed verification on September 10, when a staff member of the Anambra State Motor Vehicle Authority presented documents for registration and uploading of the tricycle. 


The documents identified Reverend Father Ikezuе Jeremiah Chinuogu of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka Diocese, as the proposed owner, prompting verification through the FRSC National Vehicle Identification Scheme. 


During verification, the NVIS Desk Officer discovered that the tricycle had previously been registered in the FRSC database, leading to further checks and investigation. 


The existing registered owner, Mr. Okoye Obiwenite of Ikenga Ogidi, was contacted and explained that he had given the tricycle to Mr. Aniagbaoso Nnamdi Chigozie on hire purchase. 


Further investigation revealed that the tricycle was reportedly stolen on December 27, 2025, after Mr. Aniagbaoso Chigozie allegedly parked it at his residence. 


Following the discovery, Reverend Father Ikezuе Jeremiah Chinuogu was invited for clarification and brought the person who sold the tricycle to him, while Mr. Chigozie subsequently identified it. 


The recovered tricycle, bearing number plate JJT357VD, was found with a plate not assigned to it in the FRSC NVIS database and remains secured at the Sector Command. 


The persons connected with the transaction have been handed over to the State Intelligence Bureau of the Nigeria Police Force for questioning, while the Sector Commander commended the verification process. 


Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno urged the public to verify vehicle ownership and particulars before purchase or transfer, stressing that proper checks can prevent stolen-vehicle transactions and support crime prevention.
