 "It's a Bad Idea" – Ifeanyi Udeze Rejects Obafemi Martins' Call for Seyi Tinubu to Lead NFF


The debate over who should lead the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sparked a division among former Super Eagles stars. Ex-defender Ifeanyi Udeze has openly dismissed a proposal by his former international teammate, Obafemi Martins, who suggested Seyi Tinubu, the son of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the federation's top job.


Martins Advocates for Youthful Leadership


The discussion began when former Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins appeared as a guest on The Obi One Podcast, hosted by Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel. During the episode, Martins argued that Nigerian football is desperately in need of a modern, youthful perspective to revitalize the sport and connect with the aspirations of the fans.


Martins proposed 40-year-old Seyi Tinubu as a viable candidate, stating that his youth and understanding of the local landscape make him a strong fit to lead the NFF. "We just need someone that can help a young person that understands the game and the system," Martins remarked, suggesting that Tinubu could bring positive change if given the opportunity.


Udeze Fires Back: 'It's a Bad Idea'


However, Udeze did not mince words when reacting to Martins' endorsement. Speaking during a sports program on Brila FM, the former defender rejected the idea outright, questioning the motivation behind Martins' comments.


"For me, it’s a bad idea," Udeze declared. "I don’t know what made Martins make such a statement maybe because he’s a friend to Seyi Tinubu but like I said, I don’t buy the idea."


Udeze emphasized that if the focus is purely on bringing younger administrators into the fold, there are other qualified sports personalities with deeper ties to the game. He pointed out former Super Eagles midfielder Seyi Olofinjana as a far more suitable example of the type of youthful leadership Nigerian football requires, adding that Martins is "on his own" with his recommendation.


Turbulent Times for the NFF


This public disagreement comes at a critical juncture for Nigerian football. The NFF is currently in a state of transition following the recent resignations of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and several executive committee members.


The leadership exodus followed a series of underwhelming performances by Nigeria’s national teams in various international qualifiers and tournaments. In response to the decline, President Bola Tinubu ordered a comprehensive restructuring of the country's football administration, opening the door for intense speculation regarding who will take the helm of the federation next.
