King Charles Draws Red Line As Harry And Meghan Barred From Returning As Working Royals

King Charles has drawn a clear line under Prince Harry and Meghan’s royal status, ruling out any return to official duties despite the couple’s recent move back to the United Kingdom.

A letter sent on behalf of the King by the Lord Chamberlain, one of the Palace’s senior officials, has clarified that the arrangement reached when the Sussexes stepped down from royal duties in 2020 remains in force.

Harry and Meghan will retain their titles as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex but will not use the styles “His Royal Highness” and “Her Royal Highness”. They remain private citizens and will not represent the Royal Family during their engagements.

The letter states that any charitable work or public appearances by the couple will be carried out in a private capacity and should not be treated as official royal engagements.

The clarification has reportedly been circulated to Harry’s team, government departments, military officials and Lord Lieutenants, who can be involved in organising royal visits and engagements.

The Palace has also directed organisations seeking guidance on how Harry and Meghan should be received, particularly when public funds could be involved, to Buckingham Palace.

The intervention reinforces the so-called Sandringham Agreement reached after Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties, which ruled out a “half-in, half-out” role allowing them to combine commercial activities with official royal responsibilities.

The couple returned to the UK with their children, Archie and Lilibet, last month and are expected to become more publicly active as they settle into Britain and support their charitable causes.

Harry is expected to continue his involvement with organisations including the Invictus Games, while Meghan has reportedly been considering a return to acting.

The Palace has separately stressed that security matters concerning the couple should continue to be handled by the relevant police authorities.

Harry has previously challenged the level of security protection available to him and his family in Britain.

The latest message from Buckingham Palace appears intended to prevent any confusion over the Sussexes’ position as they resume a more visible presence in the UK.

Their return may bring them back into the British public spotlight, but according to the King’s latest clarification, it will not bring them back into the working Royal Family.
