 NAF COMPLETES LOCAL REASSEMBLY OF FIRST TWO H125 HELICOPTERS IN LAGOS The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully completed the local reassembly of its first two H125 helicopters at NAF Base Ikeja, Lagos, following their delivery by Airbus. Conducted with the support of Airbus technical personnel, the exercise marks an important milestone in strengthening technical collaboration, facilitating knowledge transfer and enhancing NAF personnel’s practical exposure to the support and maintenance of modern rotary-wing platforms. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the development as a positive step towards strengthening the NAF’s technical and operational capacity.  Kunle Afolayan Warns Nollywood Producers Will Flee YouTube If Naira Recovers


Prominent Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has expressed skepticism over the sustainability of Nollywood's current migration to YouTube, attributing the trend strictly to the nation's volatile foreign exchange rate.


Speaking during an insightful interview with Kemi Adeosun, Nigeria's former Minister of Finance, the acclaimed director argued that while YouTube serves as an accessible launchpad for emerging creators, it cannot compete with global streaming giants like Netflix and Prime Video in the long run.


The Dollar Factor: Why YouTube is Currently Lucrative


According to Afolayan, the primary catalyst driving local filmmakers to self-publish on YouTube is the weakness of the Nigerian Naira against the US dollar. With the exchange rate hovering around ₦1,400 to $1, monetization payouts from Google in foreign currency translate into substantial local earnings.


Afolayan explained that reaching one million views on the platform can net a creator around $10,000. At current exchange rates, this represents a massive windfall. However, he warned that this business model is highly vulnerable to economic shifts, predicting that if the Naira strengthens significantly to say, ₦200 to $1 producers would quickly abandon the platform.


A Launchpad, Not the Final Destination


While Afolayan acknowledges YouTube's utility, he maintains that it should not be viewed as the ultimate destination for premium cinema. He described the platform as a flexible, democratic space ideal for beginners who lack the financial muscle or industry connections to secure premium distribution.


For filmmakers lacking the leverage to negotiate with major players, self-distribution on YouTube offers immediate financial returns and audience reach. However, Afolayan emphasized that true prestige and long-term industry growth still reside with dedicated streaming services that offer structured, high-value acquisition deals.
