 President Tinubu returns home after working vacation in the UK and France INITIAL REPORT: STATEHOUSE PRESS RELEASE President Tinubu departs Paris for Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ended his working vacation and has already departed Paris, France, for the homeward journey to Nigeria. President Tinubu’s aircraft is expected to touch down at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, later this evening. The Nigerian leader chose to fly to Lagos first to honour the memory of Chief MKO Abiola, the martyr of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.  On Independence Day, the President will attend the premiere of a movie honouring Abiola, the winner of the June 1993 election, at the Wole Soyinka National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos. While in Lagos, President Tinubu will also hold strategic meetings with political leaders and associates over several days in preparation for the 2027 elections. La Liga president Javier Tebas has publicly called for the “most severe sanction” to be imposed on English champions Manchester City, should an independent panel's reported findings of financial rule breaches be officially confirmed. Tebas's strong comments underscore the escalating pressure and scrutiny facing the Abu Dhabi-backed club.


Reports circulated on Friday indicating that an independent panel had found Manchester City guilty on all but one of 115 charges related to breaking Premier League financial regulations. However, the English top-flight has yet to make any official announcement regarding these findings or potential penalties. Manchester City has consistently and strenuously denied all charges, with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak issuing a defiant statement asserting the club's eventual vindication.


Tebas Emphasizes Integrity and Long-Term Breaches


Speaking at a football performance and health summit in London, Tebas articulated his long-standing concerns about Manchester City, which he claims date back to 2017. He stressed the critical importance of “equal rules for all” to safeguard the integrity and sustainability of the sport across Europe.


“To have been breaking the rules for more than 10 years, however minor the breaches may have been, is very serious,” Tebas stated. He argued that a severe punishment is necessary not merely to set an example, but because the rules were undeniably broken. The Spanish football chief expressed hope that the outcome of this situation would mark a significant “before-and-after moment” for not only the Premier League but for European football at large, citing what he termed “the Manchester effect” across the continent.


Call for CAS Review of UEFA Ban


Tebas also took aim at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), urging it to re-evaluate its 2020 decision to overturn a two-year European ban that UEFA had previously imposed on Manchester City. He contended that the sanctions were lifted in a “very questionable way” and that recent developments now demonstrate UEFA’s initial stance was correct.


Potential Consequences and Club Reactions


While no official word on sanctions has emerged, discussions around potential penalties include a severe points deduction or even expulsion from the Premier League. Other clubs are reportedly seeking legal advice regarding possible compensation, highlighting the widespread implications of the allegations.


Since Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi United Group acquired Manchester City in 2008, the club has undergone a dramatic transformation, securing eight Premier League titles, a Champions League crown, and numerous other trophies over the past 15 years.
