LAGOS TURNS ALAUSA PURPLE TO DRIVE AWARENESS ON DOMESTIC, SEXUAL VIOLENCE
The Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has continued to demonstrate strong commitment to the protection of residents and the fight against Domestic and Sexual Violence (DSV), through sustained investment in prevention, survivor support, public awareness and access to justice.
In furtherance of this commitment, the Head of Service of Lagos State, Mr. Bode Agoro, has joined the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) to champion the “Turn Alausa Purple” campaign, as part of activities marking the 2026 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month. The initiative is designed to draw public attention to the realities of Domestic and Sexual Violence and encourage collective action towards its prevention.
Speaking on the initiative, Agoro said the campaign was a reminder that the fight against domestic and sexual violence must not be left to government agencies alone, but requires the involvement of every individual and institution.
He said, “Turning Alausa purple is more than illuminating our offices and public spaces. It is a statement that we recognise the problem, we care about those affected, and we are committed to creating an environment where everyone feels safe and protected.”
The Head of Service urged public servants to see themselves as important stakeholders in the fight against DSV, noting that awareness must translate into action by speaking up, supporting survivors and directing those in need to the appropriate support services.
The campaign will see public buildings, offices and strategic locations within Alausa illuminated and adorned in purple, the recognised colour of the DSV awareness campaign. The visual display is expected to serve as a reminder to workers, visitors and residents that preventing domestic and sexual violence is a responsibility that requires everyone’s involvement.
The initiative is also in line with the vision of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to build a safer and more responsive Lagos where survivors can access the necessary support and residents are encouraged to speak up against all forms of violence and abuse.
Speaking on the campaign, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the “Turn Alausa Purple” initiative goes beyond the physical transformation of the environment, noting that it is intended to spark conversations and inspire action.
She said, “We want the purple in Alausa to be more than a colour. We want it to remind everyone who sees it that domestic and sexual violence is real, it affects people around us, and we all have a role to play in preventing it.”
Vivour-Adeniyi urged Public Servants experiencing violence, as well as those who witness or suspect cases of abuse, to speak up and seek appropriate support, stressing that survivors should not be left to face their experiences alone.
She further called on members of the public, private organisations, media, schools, communities and other stakeholders to support the awareness campaign by sharing accurate information on prevention, reporting channels and available support services.
The “Turn Alausa Purple” campaign forms part of the wider activities lined up by the Lagos State Government for the 2026 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, reinforcing the State’s commitment to building safer homes and communities and strengthening collective action against Domestic and Sexual Violence.
The Lagos State Government, through the DSVA, remains committed to protecting residents, supporting survivors and strengthening systems that promote prevention, justice and accountability in the fight against Domestic and Sexual Violence.
