PDP’s Abraham Amah Defends Wike’s Rainbow Coalition, Says It Benefits Tinubu in South-East and Beyond

Amid the ongoing clash between Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and some APC governors over the formation of a “rainbow coalition,” Abia State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Abraham Amah, has described the alliance as a strategic win-win for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 reelection bid.

Speaking on a television interview on Wednesday, Amah argued that any criticism of Wike for initiating the coalition should come primarily from PDP members rather than others. He maintained that the arrangement strengthens Tinubu’s political prospects, particularly in challenging regions.

Amah noted that while the South-South possesses influential figures capable of mobilising support for the president, the South-East presents far greater difficulties. He described several parts of the zone as places where securing even 25 per cent of the votes would be “almost impossible” for Tinubu without additional help.

He singled out Anambra State, where Governor Chukwuma Soludo has openly endorsed the president, saying any votes Tinubu secures there would largely be attributable to Soludo’s influence. In contrast, Amah said Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma would struggle to deliver meaningful support for the president without the rainbow coalition, which is led by PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

The same dynamic applies in Abia State, Amah added. He recalled that Governor Alex Otti had publicly distanced himself on national television from the position of the South-East governors who backed Tinubu’s reelection. Amah also highlighted Otti’s closeness to former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to Amah, states such as Anambra, Abia and Imo, along with some northern states, will require the rainbow coalition to deliver for the president. He said the coalition would also help Tinubu compete more effectively in the North against opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Amah claimed that many APC governors actually support the coalition, while Uzodinma is among those most concerned about its potential consequences. He asserted that on the streets of Imo, it would be very difficult for the president to secure 25 per cent of the votes without Anyanwu’s efforts.

Dismissing a recent statement read by Uzodinma on behalf of APC governors, Amah described the Imo governor as “a man who is on his way out.” He insisted the statement neither represents the president, the people, nor all APC governors.

Amah’s comments come as tensions continue between Wike and some APC governors over the rainbow coalition’s role and implications ahead of the 2027 general elections.
