Russia Threatens ‘Harsh And Painful’ Retaliation After Hungary Expels 10 Diplomats


Russia has threatened a strong retaliation against Hungary after Budapest expelled 10 Russian diplomats over alleged activities deemed incompatible with their diplomatic status.


Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned that Moscow’s response would be “harsh and painful,” accusing what she called a “Russophobic lobby” in Budapest of driving the decision.


Hungary said the expulsions were carried out on national security grounds, while stressing that the move does not mean diplomatic relations with Russia have been severed.


The latest dispute adds to growing tensions between Moscow and European countries as the war in Ukraine continues.
