Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has expressed grief over the death of retired Group Captain Benjamin Baton Sabiyi, describing him as a distinguished officer, elder statesman and community leader whose contributions to Nigeria would be remembered.
Sabiyi died on September 19, 2026.
In a condolence message, Katung described the late officer as a “good man” whose life was marked by courage, discipline and selfless service to the nation.
According to the senator, Sabiyi joined the Nigerian Air Force on April 7, 1978, and served for 29 years before voluntarily retiring on March 24, 2007.
Katung said the late military officer remained committed to the development of his community and continued to provide guidance and mentorship to younger people after his retirement.
“Southern Kaduna has lost a rare gem, a patriot who served without blemish and lived with honour. His death leaves a huge vacuum that will be difficult to fill,” Katung said.
The senator extended his condolences to Sabiyi’s immediate family, the Nigerian Air Force, the Bajju community and others mourning the retired officer.
Katung also expressed condolences to the family and associates of Gambo Magaji Omo, who he described as a friendly, humble and respected individual.
“Omo’s death is a painful loss not just to his immediate family, but to all of us who knew him,” the senator said.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of both deceased persons and for their families and loved ones to be granted the strength to cope with their losses.
“Adieu, gallant officer. Adieu, community leader,” Katung said.
