Susan Sarandon says movies have been 'taken away' from her due to her political beliefs

Susan Sarandon used the premiere of her Italian film The Echo Chamber at the Venice Film Festival to reflect on how her outspoken politics have affected her career. The 79‑year‑old actress explained that despite a shift in public awareness, she continues to face professional setbacks, noting that agencies still advise studios not to hire her.

While she feels welcomed internationally, she acknowledged that major studios in the U.S. remain hesitant, illustrating the enduring influence of entrenched power structures.

Discussing her latest project, Sarandon expressed gratitude to director Andrea Pallaoro for ignoring industry warnings and casting her in the film. She suggested that although there has been progress in public understanding, strong opposition persists within Hollywood, particularly from those she described as unwilling to soften their stance toward her.

Nevertheless, she emphasized that she has found a sense of belonging and support outside the mainstream system, which has allowed her to continue working on meaningful projects.

Her remarks were met with applause, underscoring the resonance of her message. Sarandon also revisited the controversy surrounding her 2023 comments about American Jews, which led to her talent agency dropping her.

At the time, she issued an apology, clarifying that her phrasing had been a mistake and reaffirming her commitment to humanitarian values.

She concluded by stressing her dedication to peace, justice, and compassion, and her hope for open dialogue even with those who disagree with her.
