The Abia State Police Command is aware of a viral video circulating on social media depicting the assault of a young lady and her brother by some armed men at Okigwe while they were reportedly en route to Abia State University.
While it is important to note that the matter is currently under investigation by the appropriate authorities, the Command considers it necessary to clarify the following:
1. Okigwe is not under the jurisdiction of the Abia State Police Command.
2. The armed men involved are not officers of the Abia State Police Command.
3. Preliminary findings, as well as information from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) covering the area in Imo State, affirm that the individuals involved are not police officers but members of a community vigilante group. The DPO has visited the scene of the incident, and the suspects have been apprehended. Investigation is ongoing, and we await an official statement from the Imo State Command.
The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, psc+, mnips, JP, reiterates that officers of the Abia State Police Command remain professional and disciplined in the discharge of their duties. He emphasizes that any officer found wanting in conduct or discipline will not be spared from appropriate disciplinary actions.
The Command further urges members of the public to refrain from spreading misinformation. Abians are advised to verify information from appropriate authorities before posting, liking, or sharing content on social media. The spread of unverified information can create unnecessary tension, erode public trust, and pose a threat to security.
Together, we can keep Abia safe by saying
NO TO MISINFORMATION.
