‘This is a war’: South Africa battles femicide as women’s bodies pile up
South Africa is grappling with a severe femicide crisis, with nine women's bodies found in the Ekurhuleni municipality east of Johannesburg over the past two months. The latest victim, a woman in her thirties, was found half-naked and wrapped in a sheet on Thursday, September 17, n Dawn Park, Boksburg 12. According to the police, the investigations are complex, and it's still unclear whether the cases are linked or if there are multiple perpetrators involved. Athlenda Mathe, South African Police Service spokesperson, stated that investigators are examining whether copycat crimes could be involved .
The killings have sparked widespread outrage and concern over violence against women in South Africa, which has one of the highest femicide rates in the world, according to the United Nations. The country recorded 9,782 reported rapes between January and March 2026, roughly 108 reported rapes every day . President Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed to leave "no stone unturned" in the investigation, and authorities are offering a reward of 400,000 South African rand ($25,000) for information leading to the apprehension of the perpetrator or perpetrators .
Women in the area have been advised to be extremely cautious and not go out alone. Tebello Mosikili, Deputy National Commissioner for Policing, emphasized the urgency of the situation, saying, "We cannot continue picking up bodies"
