Why I Choose Port Harcourt for My Comedy Skits Despite Living in Lagos – Sabinus

Award-winning Nigerian comedian and content creator, Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus (or Mr. Funny), has shed light on his unique production strategy. Despite residing in the bustling entertainment hub of Lagos, the comic star revealed that he still travels back to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to film the majority of his viral comedy videos.

The Power of Storytelling and Authenticity

Speaking in a candid interview with media personality VJ Adams, Sabinus explained that his creative decisions are heavily influenced by the nature of his content. According to him, the gritty, highly relatable storylines he portrays are best captured within the familiar streets and atmosphere of Port Harcourt, where his comedic journey began.

While Lagos serves as his strategic base for networking, business partnerships, and lifestyle, Port Harcourt remains his primary creative canvas. He described a structured routine of traveling specifically for production cycles before returning to the nation's commercial capital to connect with industry peers.

Balancing the Hustle: Lagos Connections vs. Port Harcourt Roots

“All my comedy skits, I shoot them in Port Harcourt, but I am based in Lagos even till now,” Sabinus shared during the interview. “I have a specific time I normally go to shoot, then I come back to Lagos to enjoy my life and make some connections. But my skit shoots go down in Port Harcourt because of my kind of storyline.”

This approach highlights how deeply connected Sabinus remains to his roots. His unique brand of comedy often featuring his signature blue shirt, black trousers, and hilarious facial expressions revolves around everyday struggles that resonate powerfully with grassroots audiences. By keeping his production local to Port Harcourt, he preserves the authentic texture that catapulted him to national and international fame.

A Formula That Works

Many content creators relocate to Lagos and completely shift their production environments, sometimes losing the raw appeal that initially attracted their fanbase. Sabinus’ decision to maintain a dual-city lifestyle has proved to be a masterclass in brand preservation. It allows him to leverage the massive commercial benefits of the Lagos entertainment market while feeding his creative engine with the unmatched energy of Rivers State.
