Why Rapper Odumodublvck's Financial Request to President Tinubu is Sparking Outrage

Popular Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has ignited intense debate across social media after publicly appealing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for financial grants to support local entertainers. The outspoken musician suggested that the federal government should act as a massive record label to fund underground and established artists alike.

The Pitch: Government Funding for Nigerian Musicians

The controversy began when President Tinubu shared an update on X (formerly Twitter) detailing his meeting in Paris with Vincent Bolloré, a prominent French media and entertainment executive. Reacting to the post, Odumodublvck urged the president to go beyond mere praise for the country's booming creative industry and back it up with direct financial resources.

In his social media post, the rapper wrote, "Baba come give boys advance from government funds. Na you go be the biggest label boss. Because of you, artists no go fight their labels and underground artists go see something." He went on to urge the president to "sign all of us" to help stabilize the industry.

Backlash and Allegations of Hypocrisy

The rapper's public appeal did not sit well with many Nigerians, drawing sharp criticism from followers who accused him of misplaced priorities. Critics questioned why he chose to solicit funds from the presidency while staying silent on the severe economic hardship and security challenges currently facing the nation.

Furthermore, the request raised questions about his political integrity. Odumodublvck had previously earned widespread acclaim from fans for reportedly turning down a lucrative offer to perform at Tinubu's presidential campaign events. This sudden pivot to seeking financial assistance from the same administration has left many observers puzzled and disappointed.

Odumodublvck Defends the Call for State Support

Responding to the waves of criticism, the artist defended his stance by pointing out the disparity in how the government treats different sectors. He argued that unlike civil servants and corporate business owners who benefit from government subsidies, grants, and bailouts, musicians receive virtually no financial backing from the state.

Despite the global success and positive publicity Nigerian musicians bring to the country, Odumodublvck claimed he has yet to see an artist whose album was financially sponsored by the government. "Governmental backing for artists gatts dey," he concluded, maintaining that the creative sector deserves institutional support to reach its full potential.
