2026 WORLD HEART DAY: LASG URGES LAGOSIANS TO PRIORITISE THEIR HEALTH

The Lagos State Government, through Health District III, on Tuesday urged residents to prioritise their heart health by embracing preventive healthcare, regular check-ups, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The Permanent Secretary, Health District III, Dr Monsurat Adeleke, made this known when she featured on TVC News to commemorate World Heart Day 2026, themed “Don’t Miss a Beat.” She said the theme underscores the need for early recognition of cardiovascular disease signs.

She noted that hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption increase the risk of heart disease.

Dr Adeleke disclosed that Health District III, which oversees Primary Healthcare Centres across Ibeju-Lekki, Eti-Osa and Epe, has continued to strengthen preventive and curative healthcare services through the provision of essential equipment such as cardiac monitors, blood pressure monitors, glucometers and weighing scales to support early detection and monitoring.

She added that the District also provides regular free medical outreaches for residents, conducts public enlightenment programmes, and regularly trains healthcare workers to identify and manage cardiovascular risk factors, among other interventions.

She advised residents, especially those above 18 years and those with a family history of heart disease, to regularly check their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol at the nearest PHC, stressing that early detection saves lives.

"As Lagos State joins the global community in commemorating World Heart Day 2026, residents are urged not to miss a beat by paying attention to their heart health, recognising early warning signs and taking proactive steps towards a healthier and longer life," she said.
