Community members are now rallying around her, calling for change.
14-year-old Estrella Meras has recently garnered tons of support with community members protesting at Okeechobee County School Board on Monday, October 12th.
However, this support is something new to Estrella. It took Estrella being pushed to dark and desperate measures for people to notice her hopelessness.
Estrella has been bullied since the beginning of this school year at Okeechobee Achievement Academy. She says that she has reported the bullying to teachers and administrators, and nothing was ever done.
Recently, on the school bus, the bullying became unbearable, and Estrella felt she could not rely on the bus driver to intervene. She was literally pushed past what a young girl can rationally withstand and jumped from the window of a moving school bus.
There is video footage of Estrella jumping from the bus, and it has played a large role in gathering support from community members.
Sadly, on that day, there was no support, and rather than concern, her actions were met with laughter by students on the bus.
Estrella was completely hopeless in that instant. She went home and tried to end the bullying... permanently. She thought there was no other way out of the problem other than removing herself from the equation.
Estrella's mother found her unconscious and laying next to an empty medication bottle. She had left a note by her side saying that she was tired. To be that tired and drained at 14 is truly heartbreaking.
Thankfully, her mother found her before it was too late. Estrella spent two days in the intensive care unit.
Soon after Estrella's ordeal, video of her jumping from the bus began to be widely viewed and shared. Then, it was broadcast on the news, and people began to care about her story.
At the protest on Monday, community members chanted, "Hold bullies accountable!"
Their focus is for greater accountability for students, staff, and administration when bullying concerns are reported.
The school says the allegations surrounding Estrella are still being investigated. They have addressed the communities concerns by assuring them that their existing policies are fine and that there are no changes being made.
Our thoughts are with Estrella and her loved ones. We applaud the community for lobbying for change while showing her direct support.
