Mariana Espinoza, only 6-years-old, had just exited her school bus on Friday, October 23rd, when she fell victim to a teen that tried to outrun consequences.
As little Mariana got off of the bus around 3:30 p.m. that Friday, she no doubt had a head full of weekend plans. Plans that she never had the opportunity to fulfill.
As she was crossing the intersection near Barrington Drive and Milton Road and the school bus sat stopped with lights and signs engaged, she was taking her last breaths, sadly.
Her untimely passing was in the form of 17-year-old Lachevis Finnie and his 2015 Silver Mercedes-Benz. Video footage captured shows the Mercedes speed past the stopped bus. You can then hear an audible thump before screaming begins.
After striking 6-year-old Mariana, the vehicle quickly fled from the area.
Mariana was rushed to the hospital where she desperately clung to life until Saturday, October 24th.
17-year-old Lachevis Finnie was able to evade arrest until Monday, October 26th. The arrest came only after police released images of the vehicle involved.
Lachevis claimed he did not stop or contact 911 after the accident because he was scared. He has confessed to striking Mariana Espinoza on Friday, October 23rd.
Lachevis Finnie is being charged with felony hit and run resulting in death. His bond was set at 2.5 million.
Young drivers sometimes forget to stop for stopped busses in the opposite lane. It's a sad reality. Please be aware of your surroundings and stopped busses.
Our thoughts are with everyone who loved Mariana.
