Dawson Gosnell may look like your ordinary, average 6-year-old boy.
However, behind that adorable little face is the mind of a warrior. A fierce defender and shrewd survivor who will put himself between danger and those he cares for.
In a world where the familial bonds that once seemed sacrosanct are now seemingly eroding around us, one little boy from South Carolina is a reminder of unconditional love.
59-year-old Jan Mull is the grandmother of Dawson and his little sister, 3-year-old Hazel Gosnell. When her two grandchildren were in the midst of the worst crisis of their little lives, Jan was the lifeline they reached for to pull them back to safety.
Dawson is the son of Jan's late son Blake.
That crisis was in the form of their mother, 35-year-old Taylor Gosnell. Taylor committed the ultimate betrayal on her two young children. Dawson and Hazel's entire understanding of the world is linked to and filtered through their mother. She is supposed to be their safety.
Well, Dawson became the protector and the person responsible for their survival.
Dawson's true nature was forced to the surface on September 26th. On that date, Taylor, for reasons that are not clear, launched into a vicious attack on Dawson and Hazel.
She used a blade to severely attack her children. Authorities would later report that between the two children, there were over 50 wounds. Some of these wounds were lacerations that were so severe... they were to the bone. Chillingly, Taylor also struck both children with a baseball bat during the already unbelievable attack.
Then she left the home, leaving the two wounded children behind. Authorities believe she had intended to take their lives and believed they were gone forever, or would be soon.
Dawson and Hazel did not pass away. A phone call to Jan Mull saved the lives of both children. At approximately 2:30 p.m. Saturday, September 26th, Dawson called his grandmother to tell her that he and Hazel were hungry. This led to a trip to the home where Jan, along with a friend of Taylor's, discovered the awful truth of what these poor children had endured. They immediately called 911.
What was quickly apparent to everyone was that Dawson had taken the brunt of the attack. It was clear that this young boy had clearly placed himself in between his mother and his little sister in an attempt to shield her from harm.
This is, at once, an incredibly disturbing story and also an incredible story of love. Dawson Gosnell deserves all the awards.
Once authorities were on the scene, both children were taken to a local hospital in Spartanburg, South Carolina, before being transferred to Prisma Health Children's Hospital in Greensville.
While authorities were still on scene attempting to wrap their heads around the trauma these two young children had just somehow survived, Taylor Gosnell returned to the home.
She was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for an evaluation. During this transport, Taylor made a break for it, attempting to flee the consequences of her actions. She was quickly subdued and restrained.
The doctors quickly cleared Taylor and released her into the care of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Department. Investigators attempted to question Taylor, but she requested an attorney.
She was booked into Spartanburg County Jail on two charges of attempted m*rd*r and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Dawson and Hazel are under protective custody. The two young siblings have a lot of recovering to do, both physically and psychologically.
I'm sure Dawson will make sure he is by his little sister's side through every step of the process. I have a feeling that these two tough children have a big destiny ahead of them. I certainly hope so.
