The collision happened just before 7:00 a.m. in Ocala, Florida. A Marion County school bus was stopped on Southwest 49th Avenue Road with its warning lights flashing and stop signs fully extended as it prepared to pick up children.
Traveling directly behind it was an off-duty Gainesville Police Department officer driving a marked patrol SUV.
According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, the officer failed to stop and slammed into the rear of the bus with significant force.
The bus was carrying 12 elementary students and two adults. While 11 of the children escaped physical harm, the impact sent three people to the hospital with minor injuries: a 9-year-old student, the 37-year-old bus driver, and a 54-year-old aide.
The officer suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical center.
Emergency responders noted the severe damage to the patrol vehicle, and the crash scene remains under active investigation.
Authorities have not yet released the officer's name as they work to determine exactly what caused the collision.
