Anambra Governor Soludo Approves Federal Government and ASUU Agreement for Ojukwu University

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has officially approved the comprehensive implementation of the 2025 Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities agreement for the staff of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. The landmark directive is scheduled to take effect in January 2027.

The development was announced in a public statement on Friday by the university's Public Relations Officer, Dr. Harrison Madubueze. According to the spokesperson, the official approval was communicated to the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Kate Omenugha, through Professor Peter Onwualu, who serves as the Chairman of the university's Governing Council.

A Major Boost for Staff Welfare and Motivation

In reaction to the announcement, Professor Omenugha highly commended Governor Soludo for his decisive action. She expressed deep appreciation to the governor on behalf of the university's management, senate, staff, and students, describing him as a reliable leader who honors his commitments. She also acknowledged the constructive role played by the leadership of the university's various labor unions in facilitating the process.

For many years, the full execution of the national agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities has faced major obstacles at the state-owned institution. Previous state administrations struggled to find the political will to enact these reforms, leaving many promises unfulfilled. With this new approval, Soludo aims to deliver on his educational policy goals, which focus on restoring teaching as a highly respected and well-compensated profession.

Transforming COOU into a World-Class Institution

The state government has emphasized that the implementation of this agreement is part of a broader strategy to reposition Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University as an institution of global repute. Governor Soludo's administration has continually prioritized investments in educational infrastructure and structural systems to foster development across Anambra State.

The Federal Government and union leaders originally finalized their renegotiated agreement in 2025, following intense negotiations aimed at resolving long-term challenges related to university funding, staff welfare, and overall working conditions in the tertiary education sector.

Because state universities are funded and managed by their respective state governments rather than the federal authorities, the implementation of such nationwide agreements depends heavily on the discretion and financial commitment of individual state governors. With this approval, Anambra State joins the ranks of states taking proactive steps to align state-owned tertiary institutions with national academic standards.
