 FG ANNOUNCES TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF OWERRI AIRPORT FOR RUNWAY REHABILITATION  The  Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced the temporary closure of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, to allow for major runway rehabilitation works. A statement by the  Minister says the closure has become necessary to improve safety and operational efficiency at the airport, ahead of the Christmas travel season. It adds that the rehabilitation project is a joint partnership between the Federal Government and the Imo State Government, and will involve repairs to deteriorated sections of the runway, treatment of surface cracks, filling of potholes, resurfacing, and extension works to accommodate larger aircraft. ANAMBRA POLICE ARREST EX-CONVICT ALLEGEDLY INVOLVED IN MOTORCYCLE-ASSISTED ROBBERIES TARGETING POS OPERATORS AND OTHER VICTIMS IN AWKA; RECOVER MOTORCYCLE, AXE, CUTLASS, OTHER INCRIMINATING ITEMS


The Anambra State Police Command in the afternoon of today 9th October 2026 arrested a 27-year-old ex-convict, Chidera Anthony Eleh popularly known as “Timaya,” over his alleged involvement in a series of motorcycle-assisted robberies targeting Point-of-Sale (POS) operators and other unsuspecting victims in Awka, the State capital.


The arrest forms part of the Command’s sustained intelligence-led efforts to track down criminal elements involved in motorcycle-enabled robberies and other related offences across the State.


During the operation, police operatives recovered one motorcycle, one axe, one cutlass, and other incriminating items suspected to be connected to the alleged criminal activities.


The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue to establish the full extent of his alleged involvement and identify other accomplices.


The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, MNIPS, reiterates the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that perpetrators of criminal activities are brought to justice in accordance with the law.


The Command urges members of the public, particularly POS operators, commercial motorcycle riders, and other business owners, to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or criminal activities to the nearest police station.


Further developments shall be communicated as the weekend patrol commences.
