Chris Brown Avoids Jail After London Nightclub Attack, Gets 8-Month Suspended Sentence

Chris Brown will not be going to prison for now after a London court sentenced him over a nightclub attack that left music producer Abraham Diaw injured.

The American singer, 37, was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, receiving eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months. His co-defendant, rapper HoodyBaby, whose real name is Omololu Akinlolu, 40, received a four-month suspended sentence, also for 12 months. Both were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.

The case dates back to February 19, 2023 at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, where Brown admitted attacking Diaw with a tequila bottle. CCTV footage showed the producer being struck twice on the head, hit on the shoulder, chased, pushed to the floor and kicked while down. He later received hospital treatment at St Mary's for head trauma and a minor knee injury.

During sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner made it clear that Brown's celebrity status would not earn him special treatment, saying: "Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment - the law applies equally to everyone." He added: "This was serious, public violence... The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous."

The Metropolitan Police described the attack as "inexcusable," saying it had put a man in the hospital and that it had taken several years to secure the outcome.

Brown was arrested in the UK on May 15, 2025 at The Lowry Hotel in Manchester after returning for his Breezy Bowl XX tour and later released on £5 million bail while the case continued. He pleaded guilty to affray in July 2026, with more serious charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm dropped.

Despite his guilty plea and the seriousness of the incident, the singer has avoided immediate imprisonment, although the suspended sentence means the prison term could be activated if he breaches the conditions or commits another offence during the 12-month suspension period.
