An Indian national on a revoked visa attacked a San Antonio mom and her 3-year-old daughter at Espada Park, biting the child's face and knocking out two teeth.
Atharva Vyas, 24, grabbed Gabriella Perez by the hair and punched her, causing her to drop the girl, then assaulted the toddler while she was on the ground, according to San Antonio police and the Department of Homeland Security.
Vyas entered the United States in August 2023 on a student visa and was arrested three months later for felony assault at the University of Texas, where campus police notified ICE.
The Biden administration determined the campus assault was not egregious enough for visa revocation and took no enforcement action, according to DHS.
His visa was later revoked, and he remained in the country illegally when the park attack occurred in April 2026.
ICE has now lodged a detainer requesting that local authorities transfer Vyas to federal custody after his state criminal proceedings on charges that include injury to a child and assault.
Texas families using public parks should demand that prior felony arrests trigger immediate deportation so that preventable attacks like this one do not reach American children.
