 Infantino Apologizes for World Cup Sell-Off Plan Amid Calls for Resignation


FIFA President Gianni Infantino has formally apologized for his controversial proposal to sell a commercial stake in future World Cup tournaments, a move that comes amidst escalating pressure from European football federations demanding his immediate resignation. The apology was delivered during a three-hour FIFA Council meeting held in Zurich on Thursday.


Infantino expressed regret for failing to consult council members before advancing the initiative, which aimed to offload a 20 percent commercial share of FIFA tournaments to private equity investors. However, this gesture did little to appease a critical European leadership.


Football Association (FA) Chair Debbie Hewitt explicitly stated that the apology was insufficient, highlighting persistent, unanswered questions surrounding transparency and governance within the organization. UEFA leaders have gone further, demanding the complete release of all documentation related to the commercial proposal, alleging that the rights were set for transfer at a significantly undervalued price.


FIFA Scrutinizes Other High-Profile Decisions


The council meeting also brought other significant issues under review. The FIFA Peace Prize, exclusively awarded to U.S. President Donald Trump in December 2025, is now slated for review and likely cancellation by FIFA's Football Social Responsibility Committee.


Additionally, procedural concerns regarding the decision to suspend a one-match ban for U.S. striker Folarin Balogun during the World Cup were examined. FIFA's Legal Committee is tasked with reviewing disciplinary protocols, with findings on both the disciplinary framework and the fate of the Peace Prize expected to be presented at the next council meeting in December 2026.


Increased Development Funding Announced


Amidst the governance controversies, FIFA also outlined plans for a significant financial commitment through its Surplus Solidarity Programme. The organization intends to increase planned development funding for the 2027-2030 cycle to $6.35 billion, which will provide approximately $25 million to each member association. This ambitious financial framework is scheduled for formal evaluation at the upcoming December council session.
