 FG ANNOUNCES TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF OWERRI AIRPORT FOR RUNWAY REHABILITATION  The  Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced the temporary closure of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, to allow for major runway rehabilitation works. A statement by the  Minister says the closure has become necessary to improve safety and operational efficiency at the airport, ahead of the Christmas travel season. It adds that the rehabilitation project is a joint partnership between the Federal Government and the Imo State Government, and will involve repairs to deteriorated sections of the runway, treatment of surface cracks, filling of potholes, resurfacing, and extension works to accommodate larger aircraft.  Lagos Governor Sanwo-Olu Mourns Death of Veteran Journalist Prof Idowu Sobowale


Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed profound grief over the passing of veteran journalist, esteemed communication scholar, and former Commissioner for Education, Professor Idowu Sobowale. The renowned academic passed away on Thursday at the age of 85.


In a formal statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the death of the octogenarian as a major loss to both Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.


An Illustrious Career in Journalism and Academia


Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the remarkable legacy of Professor Sobowale, recognizing him as one of Nigeria's pioneer scholars in the field of mass communication. He noted that Sobowale's career spanned vital roles, including serving as a courageous war correspondent and a dedicated public servant who made indelible contributions to the nation.


According to the governor, the scholar's demise leaves a significant void in the education sector, particularly within mass communication studies, where his teachings shaped generations of media practitioners.


He described Sobowale as an academic who successfully bridged the gap between theory and practice, utilizing his rich, hands-on experience to elevate Nigeria's educational, media, and administrative landscapes.


A Dedicated Public Servant


During his tenure as the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Professor Sobowale was instrumental in implementing policies that advanced the state's educational system. Sanwo-Olu praised his unwavering dedication to public service, describing him as a shining example of selflessness and commitment.


The passing of Professor Sobowale is indeed a painful loss, the governor remarked, pointing out how the late scholar served with distinction across various spheres of national development.


Governor Sanwo-Olu extended his heartfelt condolences to the academic community, the Sobowale family, colleagues, and associates. He prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased's soul, asking God to grant strength and fortitude to his loved ones, friends, and former students during this difficult time.
