LAWMA CLEARS WASTE BACKLOG IN AFARIOGUN WARD, OSHODI

…Hands Over Ward to PSP Operator for Sustained Collection

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has cleared the backlog of accumulated waste in Afariogun Ward, during the second week of its waste evacuation intervention in Oshodi.

The exercise, which was co-led by LAWMA’s Executive Director, Finance, Mr Kunle Adebiyi, and the Director of Sanitation Services, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Dr Hassan Sanuth, witnessed the deployment of LAWMA staff and equipment across the streets within the ward.

Following the successful clearance, Afariogun Ward was handed over to its Private Sector Participation (PSP) operator, Messrs Excellence Limited, to sustain regular waste collection and prevent a recurrence of the waste backlog.

The Authority enjoined all PSP operators to avoid selective service and provide waste collection services to every household and commercial facility within their assigned areas, while enforcement measures would be applied against households and commercial facilities that fail to comply with applicable waste management requirements.

The intervention adopted a ward-by-ward approach to addressing accumulated waste across Oshodi, with Mafoluku Ward scheduled as the next area of focus while waste collections would be extended to other areas, including Ogunoloko, Ewu-tuntun and Shogunle thereafter.

LAWMA urged residents to pay their outstanding debt based on the old rate while discussions are ongoing for the Community Development Committee (CDC), the Local Government and the State to finalise the review of the tariff.

The Authority emphasised that the waste backlog cleared in Afariogun must not be allowed to return, urging residents to support efforts to sustain a clean and healthy environment.

LAWMA reiterated its commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure timely waste evacuation, improved service delivery and sustained environmental cleanliness across Lagos State.
