Nigerian Government Rejects Policy U-Turn, Stands Firm on Fuel Subsidy Removal and Forex Liberalization

The Federal Government has decisively ruled out any possibility of reinstating fuel subsidies or returning to a system of multiple exchange rates. This unwavering commitment to President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms was reiterated by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, in a recent statement.

Minister Oyedele's remarks were made on Saturday, responding to increasing concerns about the government's economic trajectory, particularly with the 2027 general elections on the horizon. Speaking from Bangkok, Thailand, on the sidelines of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund meetings, he underscored the administration's resolve to maintain the removal of fuel subsidy and the liberalization of the foreign exchange market.

Government Responds to International Scrutiny

Oyedele highlighted that inquiries regarding a potential reversal of these key policies are a recurring theme in discussions with international stakeholders, including rating agencies, investors, and multilateral institutions. He emphasized the government's clear stance:

"Let me be clear, this was a recurring question almost through all our engagements, but also with the rating agencies, with the investors, and the multilateral institutions. Every time they ask, are you reversing your plans? Are you bringing back subsidies? Let me be clear, there will be no return to fuel subsidies or multiple exchange rates."

This clarification comes at a time when the impact of petrol subsidy removal has intensified political debate within Nigeria. Opposition leaders have actively proposed alternative measures to alleviate the significant economic hardship currently faced by Nigerians, particularly as the nation gears up for the 2027 polls.

Opposition Criticizes Economic Policies

Among those voicing criticism are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Both prominent figures have openly faulted the current administration's economic policies, advocating for immediate interventions to mitigate the escalating cost-of-living crisis impacting citizens nationwide.

Despite these domestic pressures and international queries, the Nigerian government's position remains resolute: the transformative economic policies initiated by President Tinubu will not be reversed.
