How Fuel Subsidy Removal Funded 500 Million Dollar Lagos Airport Rebuild, Says Festus Keyamo

Aviation Infrastructure Boosted by Subsidy Reform

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has revealed that the controversial removal of the fuel subsidy under President Bola Tinubu's administration has directly funded critical aviation infrastructure. Speaking in Lagos, Keyamo disclosed that approximately 500 million dollars was raised over the last two years to finance the comprehensive reconstruction of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and other vital aviation projects.

According to the minister, the funds utilized for these major upgrades were not sourced through external borrowing. Instead, he attributed the availability of capital to improved national liquidity and a significant boost in foreign reserves, which he claims rose from 3 billion dollars to 56 billion dollars. Keyamo highlighted these economic indicators as a clear sign of growing investor confidence in Nigeria's economy.

Addressing Criticisms and Macroeconomic Stability

Keyamo made these remarks during the 67th anniversary of Aero Contractors Airline in Lagos. He was responding to inquiries from the airline's leadership regarding the status and progress of the local aviation sector under the current administration's Renewed Hope Agenda.

The minister's comments come at a time of intense public debate regarding the elimination of the petrol subsidy, which has contributed to rising inflation, elevated transportation costs, and high food prices. While critics argue that growing foreign reserves offer little immediate relief to citizens facing economic hardship, Keyamo defended the administration's fiscal strategy.

He dismissed criticisms as attempts to play on public sentiment, arguing that long-term job creation is impossible without first achieving macroeconomic stability. He emphasized that global investors only bring capital and employment opportunities to nations with healthy economic indicators and strong reserves.

Expanding Developments to Abuja Airport

In addition to the extensive work at the Lagos airport, the minister announced that the federal government is addressing long-delayed projects elsewhere. President Tinubu has approved the return of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation to construct the second runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The Abuja runway project had been stalled for years due to funding disputes and legislative opposition. Keyamo recalled that the National Assembly had previously blocked a proposed 45 billion naira budget for the runway, deeming it excessive. Due to those delays, the cost of the project has now escalated to nearly 500 billion naira.

Keyamo concluded by reiterating that sustainable employment is a direct byproduct of solid infrastructure and direct foreign investments, rather than government decrees.
