They had to make the decision because the dog refused to let first responders attend to the severely injured man.
Yesterday, sadly, the 52-year-old man lost his life after his pet pit bull mix turned on him.
Police in St. Petersburg, Florida, were called to the 2500 block of Quincy St. at 8:17 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14th.
Once on scene, they discovered a man lying in the roadway suffering from a severe dog attack. A pit bull mix, later identified as the deceased man's dog, was stalking around the injured man. The dog was dragging a leash.
As police attempted to render aid to the man, the dog became agitated and began attacking the already seriously wounded man.
Officers made the decision to shoot the dog so they could render aid.
Despite their drastic life saving measures, the man was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Although the man was clearly suffering from a severe dog attack, the medical examiner has not released an official cause of death. The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time.
It did appear it happened while the man was taking his dog for a walk, however, that has not been solidly confirmed yet.
Our thoughts are with the family of the victim.
