Russia has been striking Kyiv's Dnipro River bridges for four consecutive days, aiming to disrupt transport between the city's eastern and western banks.
On Sunday morning Oct. 4, 2026, a Russian drone hit the Pivnichnyi (Northern) Bridge for the second day in a row, damaging the road surface and trolleybus cables and injuring two people.
Video showed cars on the bridge when the drone exploded into a fireball and black smoke. The attack came hours after German Chancelor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit to pledge further support.
The strikes have also targeted the Pivdennyi (Southern) Bridge repeatedly since Oct. 1-2, forcing full or partial closures of three of Kyiv's six road bridges and causing major traffic jams. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the bridges are structurally intact but the damage has cut hot water to parts of the Desnyanskyi district and severely restricted metro and road traffic, with about 500,000 vehicles using the crossings daily.
Russia's Defense Ministry said the bridges were hit because they are used for troop and military cargo movements, while Ukrainian officials say the campaign is meant to disrupt civilian life ahead of winter.
