 Anambra Govt Warns Against Purchase of Encroached Land at Trans-Nkissi By MaryAnn Chukwuma The Anambra State Ministry of Lands has warned members of the public against purchasing plots at TransNkissi Phase 1, behind the Federal Government Girls College, Onitsha, from persons claiming ownership on behalf of the Umuosodi family of Onitsha. The warning was contained in a public notice dated Sept. 28, 2026, with Ref. No. PS/ML/2026/CR/VOL.II/028 and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Nkeiru Mokwe, for the Commissioner. According to the notice, the Ministry became aware that persons alleged to be members of the Umuosodi family had invaded and commenced clearing portions of the land with the intention of selling them to unsuspecting members of the public. It said compensatory plots had been allocated to the family and other families in Onitsha before the current administration. S. A: NINE FOREIGN NATIONALS ARRESTED FOR ILLEGAL MINING IN MASHOBODO, AS OPERATION VALA UMGODI CONTINUES

The South African Police Service, through Operation Vala Umgodi, continue to intensify operations against #IllegalMining activities in Mashobodo under Ngodwana Policing area. These unwavering efforts has resulted in the arrest of nine (09) foreign nationals from Mozambique today, Saturday 03 October 2026.

The arrests are part of many disruptive activities to destabilize illegal mining activities.

The report indicates that a multidisciplinary team under Operation Vala Umgodi were acting on intelligence information when they pounced on a group of illegal miners in Mashobodo and it was during this time when they cornered the nine male suspects. Police are working collaboratively with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to ascertain the status of the arrested suspects in the country.

During the operation, Police also recovered pendukas (mining implements), some chemicals suspected to be used to refine gold-bearing material.

The arrested suspects are facing charges in relation to illegal mining activities and possession of gold-bearing material. The nine are expected to appear at court in due course.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise emphasised that Police have been reporting the successes of the Operations and have never been reluctant nor hesitant in addressing illegal mining. The arrests further demonstrate SAPS's unwavering commitment.

"As the SAPS, we continue to ensure the utilisation of all available resources in dealing with illegal mining. Similar Operations will continue to be carried out, not only in Mashobodo, but also in other areas, including Barberton, Sabie, Pilgrim's Rest etc. We urge the public, not to harbour illegal miners whose activities have harmful repercussions for the environment and the livelihoods of residents, “said the General.
