Salawa Abeni Reveals How Bola Tinubu Provided Crucial Aid During Health Crisis

Veteran Nigerian singer Salawa Abeni has opened up about a profoundly challenging period in her life, revealing how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, prior to his presidency, extended crucial assistance during a debilitating health crisis. The 'Queen of Waka Music' shared this emotional testimony during her recent 50 years on stage celebration, expressing heartfelt gratitude for Tinubu's timely intervention.

A Period of Profound Grief and Deteriorating Health

Abeni's ordeal began following the devastating loss of her child, an event that plunged her into deep emotional distress. This personal tragedy cascaded into a severe decline in her health and significant financial hardship. Her condition reportedly worsened to the extent that she could barely walk without the aid of a walking stick, a stark contrast to her vibrant public persona.

Feeling increasingly isolated and with limited options, Abeni made the courageous decision to seek help from Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was then a highly influential political figure in Lagos State. She recounted visiting his residence at 26 Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, where she was asked to wait for him.

Tinubu's Immediate Intervention

Upon Tinubu's appearance, Abeni recalled a difficult moment when he initially struggled to recognize her. The significant physical toll of her illness had altered her appearance, making her almost unrecognizable to someone who knew her from her healthier days. This encounter underscored the severity of her condition and the vulnerability she felt in seeking aid.

However, once Tinubu grasped the gravity of her situation, his response was immediate and decisive. Abeni narrated that he promptly contacted Babatunde Raji Fashola, who was serving as the Governor of Lagos State at the time. Tinubu instructed Fashola to arrange for Abeni's flight to Dubai the following week, ensuring she could receive urgent and comprehensive medical attention.

Abeni's revelation highlights the personal impact of Tinubu's philanthropy and leadership, long before he ascended to Nigeria's highest office. Her public expression of gratitude serves as a testament to the life-changing support she received during one of the darkest chapters of her life.
